Open-source projects with the strongest commercial potential

These are the records scored 5 out of 5 for commercial potential — projects where a real problem, a payer and a plausible product all line up, not just a high star count.

Star counts measure attention, not opportunity. The score behind this page measures something narrower: whether the project solves a problem someone already pays to solve, whether the gap between the repository and a product is crossable by a small team, and whether the licence permits it.

That last part is where most exciting-looking projects fall down. A brilliant tool under a licence that forbids commercial hosting is a great read and a bad foundation, so every record here is judged on the whole path from clone to invoice — not on the demo.

Questions people ask

How is potential scored?
On four things: whether the problem is one people already pay to solve, how far the repository is from a product, how defensible the result would be, and whether the licence allows commercial use. It is an editorial judgement, stated openly rather than dressed up as a metric.
Can I build a business on an open-source project someone else maintains?
Yes, and many companies do — but the licence decides the shape of it. Permissive licences allow almost anything; copyleft and source-available licences restrict hosting it as a service, which is exactly the model most people have in mind.
Does a high score mean it is easy?
No. Potential and difficulty are separate ratings, and several of the strongest opportunities here are marked advanced. High potential usually exists because the work is real.
